A rare post

I'm not a good blogger. But I'm here once in a while.

I saw the doctor earlier this week and we talked about my migraines. He gave me a prescription for nortryptyline, which is supposed to be effective in preventing migraines. It's also an anti-depressant.

I took the first one last night and I feel like real ca-ca. Sort of like I'm wrapped in cotton batting or something and I've got low-level but constant nausea. This is the same way I've felt when I've taken other anti-depressants, for one reason or another.

Sidenote: When I was in the nursing home a couple of years ago, they berated me into agreeing to take an anti-depressant because they told me I was looney for being unhappy about being in the nursing home. I took them for a few days and then refused to continue.

I don't know what's going to happen. Maybe this horrible feeling will go away after I take these for a while. I'm not sure whether they'll prevent the migraines, either. I do have a feeling that I may have to choose between migraines every few weeks and feeling like crap all the time. We'll see.

Give it a chance. From my own experience with Paxil, the crappy feeling goes away. I had to deal with that with every new dose of my thyroid meds too, so I have hope that you'll feel better soon.

Thanks much. I hope it doesn't take long to mellow out. This is truly awful.

Looking for list of 2009 atmospheric pressure changes to link with dates of my migraines, found yr comment & blog. At 69 I've gone from 5 to 6 a year to 14 so far in 2009, and I'm getting scared cuz of link with ophthalmic migraines (my kind) and stroke. Germany has phone number for migraineurs to call for daily ap changes. Is the nortryptyline helping? Are your side effects diminishing?

Yes to both. The nortryptyline seems to be helping a lot and the side effects diminished after a few days. I haven't had a migraine since I started taking it. I have had a few of the precursor headaches but aspirin takes care of them.

The weather here has been migraine weather for me -- warm and sunny -- so it's been a pretty good test. I'm cautiously optimistic. I'll get a really good test in the next week or so, though. The rest of this week is supposed to be rainy, followed by a week of sunshine. That's when they usually hit. Fingers crossed!

I find that I am less emotional with the nortryptyline, too. Not that I feel like a zombie, but the bad edges are taken off. I found myself getting very angry at times and a migraine would often follow. Since starting the meds, there have been a couple of instances that would normally make me very angry, but didn't. That's probably a good thing. :-)

I hope you can find something to give you some relief. I appreciate your stopping by.
